Bee Cheng Hiang – Next Generation Price Label System

Developed two region-specific versions of Bee Cheng Hiang’s next-generation price label system, starting with test use in Japan, followed by a tailored rollout in South Korea.The labels were designed for in-house production in each region, with a focus on practical layout, brand consistency, and multilingual adaptability.

My Role & Responsibilities

Led the visual and structural redesign of the price labels, ensuring the layout worked seamlessly for Japanese and Korean typography. Collaborated with local teams to create a print-ready, scalable system that could be implemented quickly and flexibly across regions.

Design Approach

Product placement directly informed the label hierarchy. I designed layouts that made prices and item names easy to scan in-store, especially in a busy retail environment.

  1. Accessibility-First Layouts
    Product placement informed how information was structured. I prioritized clear hierarchy and eye flow for quick scanning in a real retail setting.
  2. Bilingual Typography Harmony
    Since BCH serves an international audience, I tested and selected font combinations that provided equal visual weight and clarity in both English and Native language — without compromising aesthetics.
  3. Premium Material Selection
    The store’s elevated concept required elevated tactile quality. I sourced and tested paper stocks that supported small-batch printing while maintaining a luxurious, refined feel.
  4. Scalable System Logic
    Instead of static one-offs, I created a modular layout framework that allowed store staff to update and replicate label designs as needed, keeping the system efficient and consistent.
  5. Typography Compatibility
    Crafted the layout to support Hangul and Kanji/Hiragana, ensuring clarity and visual cohesion in both languages.
  6. Production Efficiency
    Labels were designed for quick updates and efficient in-house printing, minimizing cost while maximizing control.
  7. Informed by Language Knowledge
    My understanding of Korean and Japanese enabled me to make layout decisions that respected regional readability and tone.

Outcome

  1. Rolled out two functional, on-brand label systems optimised for Japan and South Korea.
  2. Delivered clearer pricing and product display tools that elevated the in-store customer experience in both regions.

This project reflects how I approach in-house design — with a focus on real-world use, operational efficiency, and regional audience needs.

Because I understand Korean and Japanese, I was able to tailor two distinct next-generation label versions that respected each region’s typographic structure and user expectations.

Though the design appears minimal, every detail was crafted to ensure the system is functional, scalable, and future-ready for Bee Cheng Hiang.
